Board Of Directors

Dr. Amir Dossal, Co-Founder
Dr. Dossal is 25-year veteran of the UN and Founder and Chairman of the Global Partnerships Forum, a non-profit working to address economic and social challenges through partnerships. He is also Special Representative of Palau for Global Partnerships. Dr. Dossal is Co-Founder of the Pearl Initiative in the Middle East. In 2013, he was appointed Co-Chair of the Sustainable Oceans Alliance, a global initiative to focus the need for healthy oceans in the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Dr. Dossal serves as Special Adviser to the UN Global Compact for Strategic Relationships. 


Ambassador Elliston Rahming
Ambassador Rahming is UN Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Bahamas. Among other accomplishments, he is a leader of the UN Save Our Sharks Coalition. His previous experience includes Superintendent of Her Majesty’s Prison (Bahamas), and Founder and Chairman of the InterTech Group, a private security and investigation firm. Ambassador Rahming holds a B.A. in sociology from Bethune-Cookman University and a Ph.D. in criminology and an M.S.W. from Washington University.


Ambassador Tulik Beck

Ambassador Beck is a native of Palau and serves as its UN Ambassador for Oceans and Seas. She has been an activist for conservation and sustainable development in her home country and globally for many years. She is a founder of the nonprofit Fund for Sustainable Palau, whose initial focus has been helping Palau launch and implement the world's first nationwide marine sanctuary where industrial fishing will be entirely banned.


Deputy Ambassador Mark Newhouse, President
Deputy Ambassador Newhouse serves as Palau's Deputy Ambassador for Oceans and Seas.  He is also Executive Vice President for Newspapers at Advance Publications, which owns Condé Nast Publications and other publishing companies. He serves on the board of directors of New York City Outward Bound Schools, and is a well regarded philanthropist and committed supporter of ocean conservation. Mr. Newhouse holds a B.A. from Yale University.


Dr. Ellen Pikitch
Dr. Pikitch is a prominent scientist and thought leader in the fields of ocean science and conservation. She is currently Professor and Executive Director of the Institute for Ocean Conservation Science at the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, Stony Brook University, and was the Founder and Director of Ocean Strategy, Marine Conservation Programs, and Fisheries Programs at the Wildlife Conservation Society. Dr. Pikitch was elected a 2015 Fellow by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world's largest general scientific society. She was specifically honored for "distinguished contributions to the fields of fisheries and conservation science, particularly development and application of quantitative methods to sustainably manage exploited marine fishes." Other professional highlights include academic and research positions at the University of Miami, University of Washington, and Columbia University. She holds a B.S. and M.A. in Mathematics from The City College of C.U.N.Y. and a Ph.D. in Zoology from Indiana University.


Mr. Craig Powell
Mr. Powell is an expert in the law of the ocean and seas. He has been in public service for the Bahamas for over 25 years, currently as a Delegate to the UN General Assembly and Third Secretary at the Bahamas Permanent Mission to the UN. Mr. Powell holds a B.A. from the University of Windsor and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of the West Indies, and is a graduate of the Rhodes Academy of Oceans Law and Policy.

Ms. Rosalind Walrath, Treasurer

Ms. Walrath is active in conservation. She is on the Board of Directors for the New York League of Conservation Voters, a bi-partisan nonprofit that helps pro-environmental political candidates get elected and educates the public about environmental issues. She is also involved in the restoration of Shinnecock Bay in Southampton NY, through an advisory council for the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook University. She holds a B.A. from Middlebury College and an MBA from the Wharton School of Business. 

In Memorium: Ambassador Stuart Beck, Co-Founder
Ambassador Beck served as UN Ambassador for Oceans and Seas of Palau, focusing on promoting ocean sustainability on an international level, reversing the decline of fish stocks and ocean health, and promoting new forms of governance for the high seas. Prior to that, he served for 10 years as UN Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Palau. His career included many years of experience in business, law, and academia, including as President of Granite Broadcasting, Partner at Richenthal, Birnbaum and Beck, and Visiting Lecturer at Yale Law School. Ambassador Beck held an A.B. in Government from Harvard College and a J.D. from Yale Law School.
